Based on my experience, you really need to zero in on what you're looking for before you try and hire someone. If you're looking for someone to build your family tree, they're likely going to charge you a pretty penny for doing work that anyone with an internet connection and an Ancestry subscription could do themselves.

Pros can definitely be invaluable in specific instances, like if you lose the trail of an ancestor in Hartford, Connecticut in 1745, someone who does regular work in churches and archives there might be able to get in and comb through records that haven't been digitized, and may very likely already be familiar with the family in question.

Apart from that situation, most pros (in my experience) aren't magically able to find things the rest of us can't, they're just fanatics like the rest of us who have decided to try and do it for a living.
