I understand that it WASN'T worth considering, and it would have been idiotic to undertake. But again, in HINDSIGHT: 4.5m killed in China alone by the Communists, then Soviet post-war purges, Korea, Vietnam, how close we came to nuclear war. As someone else pointed out, some other rival threat may very well have emerged, but it's tempting to imagine a world where China and Russia today have human rights and global relations on par with Japan and Germany?
