Came to say the same. I think he has to win hands down in terms, at least, of "more harshly criticized" since–as you point out–a large swath of the country opted to secede, some upon his election, others upon his response to the initial secession.

He obviously had the bad fortune of being the head of the government when a war that had been brewing from the beginning of the Republic finally came, but when a over half a million of your citizens are killed during your administration, I think you have to get some votes for worst president, especially since he had no ideological consistency, offering to amend the Constitution to enshrine slavery, then wiping out a generation to end it.
