I think everything you're saying is sound, and our disagreement represents "foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels" rather than critical doctrine, but my concern is that your argument ("science is clearly at odds with the Biblical account, so we must assume the account to not be literal") could very easily transfer to any number of other critical elements of doctrine.

Science shows that consciousness comes from brain activity, and in death, the brain ceases to function, so awareness after death is an impossibility, so Heaven and Hell are clearly representative of our experiences on earth, in which case, while I still appreciate God giving me life, I've only got a few years so I'm not going to be wasting any more time in church. I'm going–to quote Frank Reynolds–"to get real weird with it."
