Angle of marks on 1840 census?

Hey all, was doing some research on an ancestor, George McCullough, in Newberry, South Carolina in the 1840 census. You'll see him 6th from the top in this image

Interestingly, Ancestry's transcription (which is often flawed) shows only 1 male in the household, between 30-39, but the actual image shows an additional mark in the column 60-70. However, while the vast majority of marks on the form slant forward, that one slants back. Only a few others do, and they are all males 60 and over.

Has anyone ever encountered this? Am I reading too much into it?
